Six Abodes of Murugan (AaruPadai Veedu)

In Tamil Nadu, spread across the length and breadth of this southern state of India, are the six stunning abodes of Lord Murugan, also known as Muruga, Skanda, Kartikeya, and Vadivela. Renowned for their legacy, sanctity, and architectural grandeur, these divine temples include Thirupparamkunram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. These sacred abodes are mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature, such as Nakkeerar’s Thirumurugatrupadai and saint Arunagirinathar’s Thiruppugazh.

Let’s explore these six must-visit holy destinations, collectively known as the ‘AaruPadai Veedu’.

Palani

Thiru Avinankudi Temple, popularly called Palani Temple, is situated nearly 1500 ft above sea level. This ancient temple offers panoramic views of Palani town, the Kodaikanal Hills, Idumban Hill, the Western Ghats, rivers, lush paddy fields, and nearby educational institutions. On clear days, the Kurinji Andavar Temple can also be seen against the sunrise. The deity, Dandayudhapani Swami, is made of nine minerals (Navapashanam) by the yogi Siddha Bogar. He wears a loincloth and holds a staff, symbolizing renunciation to attain the divine. Murugan here represents youth, beauty, and spiritual power.

Swamimalai

Swamimalai Temple has three Gopurams and three Praharams. The southern Gopuram has five storeys adorned with statues, while the other two Gopurams have no towers. The Praharams are arranged from the foothill to the top of the hill. Entering through the Raja Gopuram and Kalyana Mandapam, devotees can visit shrines of Goddess Sakti and other deities. A special well, VajraTeethra, is located here. Architectural marvels depicting legendary stories can be seen as you ascend towards the main temple.

Thiruchendur

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. After defeating the demon Surapadma, Lord Murugan visited this temple to worship Lord Shiva. Uniquely, its main entrance is on the western side due to the proximity of the sea. The Mela Gopuram has nine storeys, standing 137 ft high, 65 ft wide, and 90 ft long, with nine Kalasams (holy copper pots) atop, symbolizing its significance.

Thirupparamkunram

At Thirupparamkunram, the Lord is depicted in a wedding setting with his consort Deivanai. Surrounding the deity are Saraswathi, Savithri, Brahma, Indra, and Narada Muni. Celestial Gandharvas are above, and Lord Murugan’s vehicles, the elephant and sheep, are below. The sanctum uses a scented paste called Punugu, with only the Vel used for Abhishekam. During Purattasi (September–October), the Vel is taken to Kasi Viswanatha shrine nearby. The gold chariot used in annual processions is a recent addition for devotees.

Thiruthani

Thiruthani Temple is the fifth abode of Lord Murugan. According to legend, Indra, King of Gods, gifted his white elephant Airavatam to Murugan as dowry. The elephant in the temple faces east as per ritual significance. Sage Agasthiyar Muni also worshipped the Lord here and was blessed with the Tamil language. The temple has associations with Vasuki, the King of Snakes, who healed his wounds here after the cosmic churning of the Milky Ocean.

Pazhamudircholai

Pazhamudircholai Temple is located about 25 km north of Madurai, on a hilltop surrounded by dense forests. Goddess Valli’s shrine and Lord Murugan’s shrine with Deivayani are found here, along with a temple of Lord Ganesha. A tower is inhabited by playful monkeys. The temple is accessible by two-wheeler, car, bus, or shuttle services. The area is rich in flora, fruits, vegetables, and natural springs. Local tribes reside near the upper shrine, maintaining the fertile terrain and rare herbs.
